Stefan Gec was born in 1958 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire. His Ukrainian father settled in Britain after the Second World War, having been forced in 1942 to leave his home by the advancing German army and to work as a labourer in Austria.
Stefan Gec studied fine art at the University of Huddersfield, the University of Northumbria in Newcastle upon Tyne and the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London. Since 1989 he has been gaining critical acclaim in Europe and North America with his various site-specific and process-based works of art, which draw on his Ukrainian heritage and explore his relationship with British and European culture. He lives and works in London.
In 2002 a book about his work was published by Black Dog Publishing (Stefan Gec, by Andrew Patrizio, edited by Jon Bewley, ISBN 1901033430). In 2003 he was one of the shortlisted artists invited to submit a proposal for a sculpture for the 4th Plinth in Trafalgar Square.
