Born in the Chernivtsi region of Western Ukraine, the baritone Vassily Gerello studied at the Chernivtsi School of Music and at the Leningrad Conservatory. In 1990, while still a student, he became a soloist of the Mariinsky Opera, and has sung various roles in many opera houses, including those of Paris, Dresden, Berlin, Vienna, Venice and Covent Garden. He has also sung in many concerts, both in the UK and elsewhere. He was a prizewinner at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition in 1993.
