Ulyana Gumeniuk was born in Ukraine in 1975. Between the ages of 11 and 21 she studied in St. Petersburg, initially at the Secondary Art School of the Academy of Fine Arts and subsequently at the Academy itself. Then she moved to London to study at St. Martins College, where she used the transition from Figurative and Classical to Contemporary and Representative disciplines as the basis for her work.
Her works have been exhibited in the UK, Italy, Canada, Germany and Russia, including at two solo exhibitions in London in 2002. In May 2003 she won the BP/National Portrait Gallery Travel Award, and in 2006 was awarded First Prize in the Wales Portrait Award.
