Pavlo Hunka, bass-baritone, was born in the UK of a Ukrainian father and British mother. After initially qualifying and practising as a lawyer, in 1988 he won a scholarship to the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where he graduated with distinction. In 1991 he began a three-year contract at the Basel Opera House in Switzerland and continued his studies with Maria Sandulescu. At the end of his Basel contract he began a successful opera career on the European continent. In 2001 he returned to live in England.
Pavlo Hunka has sung over 30 leading operatic roles in major opera houses around the world, including Vienna, Paris, Moscow, Salzburg, Florence, Madrid, Munich, Berlin, Amsterdam, Rome, Geneva and Tokyo. His recent roles include the Dutchman in The Flying Dutchman (Bordeaux), Don Pizarro in Fidelio (Munich), Boris in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (London - ENO), Dikoj in Katya Kabanova (Munich), Friedrich von Telramund in Lohengrin (Turin) and Lysiart in Euryanthe (Glyndebourne).
