Vassily Savenko

The Ukrainian bass-baritone Vassily Savenko was born near Odesa, Ukraine, and graduated in vocal studies from the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. A prize-winner at the Mussorgsky and Lysenko Competitions, he sang principal roles for major opera houses in Ukraine and Russia before taking up residence in the UK. He has appeared regularly at the Wigmore Hall and the South Bank as well as the Cheltenham and Three Choirs Festivals.

His recent operatic appearances include Baron (Miserly Knight) and Lanciotto Malatesta (Francesca da Rimini) in a Rachmaninov double-bill for Chelsea Opera; Tomsky/Plutus (Queen of Spades) for Opera Ireland; Prince Zhemchuzhny (Oprichnik) for Teatro Lirico di Cagliary under Gennadi Rozhdestvensky; Foka (Enchantress) with the Kirov Opera for Teatro Nacional de Sao Carlos, Lisbon; Baldassare (L’Arlesiana) for Opera Holland Park; Ferrando (Il Trovatore) and Bonzo (Madame Butterfly) at the Welsh National Opera.

Among the works premiered by Vassily Savenko in the UK are Two Romances by Ukrainian composer Borys Liatoshynsky.
