Anna Shafajinskaia, soprano, was born in Odesa, Ukraine, into a family with a tradition of acting, music and art. After graduating from the Gnesin Institute of Music in Moscow she performed in various operas and operettas, as well as gaining popularity as a pop singer. She then settled in Canada and appeared in various opera houses there. In 1995 she won the Pavarotti International Voice Competition. A year later she was chosen by Pavarotti to sing Tosca opposite him. Since then she has appeared on many world stages, including in Oslo, Liège, London (Covent Garden), Durban, New Orleans, New York and Amsterdam.
