Svetlana Zakharova, currently a principal dancer with the Kirov Ballet, was born in 1979 in Lutsk, North-West Ukraine. She initially trained for six years at the Kyiv Ballet School. In 1995 she won second prize at the Vaganova-Prix International young dancers' competition in St. Petersburg, Russia, and was admitted to the Vaganova Ballet Academy. In the following year she graduated into the Kirov Ballet where, in 1997, she was promoted to principal dancer.
With the Kirov Ballet Svetlana Zakharova has performed in various countries worldwide, including the UK, the USA, Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, Australia and Japan. She has also performed as guest artist with ballet companies in Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo, Munich, Paris and Rome. Her recent performances include the title role in Manon, Diamond in Jewels, Nikiya in La Bayadere, Medora in Le Corsaire and the 1st movement in Symphony in C.
