Most parts of Ukraine have a temperate climate, the exceptions being the Carpathian and Crimean mountain regions, with their mountain climates, and the southern coast of the Crimea which has a subtropical Mediterranean climate. Average temperatures in January range from -7° C in the north-east to +4° C on the southern Crimean coast, with absolute minimum temperatures around -30° C to -40° C in most of the country. Average July temperatures range from 19° C in the north-east to 24° C in southern Crimea, and absolute maximum values are between 36° C and 42° C.
In most of the country rainfall is highest in the summer (June-July) and lowest in winter (January-February). On the southern Crimean coast, however, rainfall is highest during December-January. In winter much of the country is usually covered by snow.
