Exports

During the Soviet era Ukraine produced the largest economic output of all the non-Russian USSR republics, and exported significant volumes of agricultural and industrial products and raw materials to other parts of the Soviet Union. Since the break-up of the USSR, trade with other ex-Soviet states has diminished and Ukraine has extensively broadened the range of countries to which it exports. The proportion by value of Ukraine’s exports of goods and services going to countries within the Commonwealth of Independent States was 31% in 2006, compared with 57% in 1996.

The geographical distribution of Ukraine’s exports of goods and services in 2006 was as follows (US$ millions):

  Goods Services
Europe (exc CIS) 12,626 2,361 14,986
CIS 10,731 3,451 11,182
Rest of the World 15,012 1,693 16,705
  38,368 7,506 45,874

In 2005 the main exported commodities were metals and metal products (41% of exports of goods), machinery (14%), fuel and energy products (13%), food-related items (13%) and chemical-related products (11%).
